Team EnVyUs, also known as Team Envy, is a multi-game eSports organization who currently has teams in Call of Duty, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Gears of War, Halo, Overwatch, SMITE, and StarCraft 2.
Overview
Team EnVyUs was established in 2007 for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare team by players FoRePLayy and StaiNViLLe. They quickly became relevant in the CoD scene, which allowed them to branch out into other games. The organization was eventually acquired by Mike "Hastr0" Rufail, the current owner/managing director.
Biography
Halo 5: Guardians
Team EnVyUs' first venture into Halo was officially announced on November 10, 2015. The organization announced the signing of Richie "Heinz" Heinz, Justin "iGotUrPistola" Deese, Bradley "APG" Laws along with the acquisition of Austin "Mikwen" McCleary in a player transaction with Team Liquid.[1] On December 15, EnVy Halo won the first Astro Gaming Spartans $1,000 4v4 online tournament, defeating Winterfox in the finals. On January 13, APG and Heinz left Team EnVyUs to join Team Liquid.[2] They were quickly replaced by Scott "Cloud" Holste and Jacob "Hysteria" Reiser. During the next week, a team change frenzy was sparked by Lethul leaving Evil Geniuses. This lead to Mikwen and Pistola recruiting new free agent Tom "OGRE2" Ryan, and quickly rounding out the roster with Jacob "Arkanum" Santos. Cloud and Hysteria would go on to form Triggers Pound. The team would eventually qualify for the HWC NA Regional Finals 2016 as the #6 seed. At the tournament, they would go 0-2 in the group stage, first being defeated by Evil Geniuses and then being upset by Denial eSports. As a result, they would not qualify for Halo World Championship 2016.
On April 8, EnVy Halo made a roster change, releasing OGRE2 and Arkanum and replacing them with Visal "eL TowN" Mohanan and Tim "Rayne" Tinkler.[3] As a result of bringing in a member of the 2nd place team at Worlds, EnVyUs were one of four teams invited to the HCS Pro League Invitational 2016 and given a chance to qualify for the HCS Summer 2016 Pro League early. EnVyUs fell just short of qualifying, losing to Evil Geniuses in the finals by a score of 4-2. EnVy did not blow their second chance however, finishing in the top 4 at the Summer Qualifier after going 2-1 in their pool. Following a grueling season, EnVyUs, notably having the most maps played of any team in the league, finished in 3rd place. At the Season Finals, EnVyUs came out hot, defeating the 2nd seeded Enigma6 Group in 6 games. In the Winners Finals, EnVy were defeated in a 4-0 sweep by World Champions Counter Logic Gaming. In the Losers' Finals, EnVy were defeated 4-3 in a rematch with Enigma6, ending their night with a 3rd place finish. Not long after Finals, EnVyUs started scrimming with a new roster, replacing eL TowN with Eric "Snip3down" Wrona. Not long after, they began scrimming with Cuyler "Huke" Garland in place of Rayne. Rayne's departure was confirmed when Team Liquid announced their new roster.[4] Few days later, eL TowN confirmed his departure by joining Luminosity Gaming. [5] On the night of roster lock, the acquisitions of Snip3down and Huke were made official by the organization, with Snip3down releasing an apology for the manner in which he helped coerce Huke into joining the team.[6]
The new nV roster was immediately seen by the community and analysts as a contender for 1st place, with many believing they had what it takes to dethrone Counter Logic Gaming. They became the first team to defeat CLG in a scrim shortly after forming, causing a minor social media scuffle between Snip3down and LethuL after the fact. After the CLG members were acquired by OpTic Gaming, a rivalry most famous in Call of Duty made its way to Halo. nV had a strong start to the Fall Season, going 3-1 in their first two weeks. In their highly anticipated first match with OpTic Gaming, they won a closely contested five-game contest against the Summer Champions. At HCS Orange County 2016, EnVy finished second, falling to OpTic in three consecutive series (once in the Seeding Bracket and twice in the Championship Bracket) with an overall map count of 2-9 against them. EnVyUs did defeat the other Pro League teams in attendance - Enigma6 Group and Team Liquid, with final map counts of 9-2 and 3-1, respectively. A few weeks later, a revised EnVyUs lineup featuring OpTic member LethuL subbing in for Mikwen competed at UGC St. Louis 2016 under the team name Truce, taking 1st place. EnVyUs ultimately finished the Fall Pro League season with a 13-1 record, good enough for 1st place. A few weeks later, they attended the HCS Las Vegas 2016 event, where they finished 1st over five other Pro League teams, not including OpTic Gaming. In the Winners Finals, nV were upset in a 3-1 loss to Team Liquid, but they made good on their second chance, winning two straight best-of-7s in the Grand Finals to secure 1st place. At the Pro League Season Finals, the big question was "can EnVyUs dethrone OpTic?". After dismantling Str8 Rippin in the first round, EnVy had the chance to answer that question in the Winners Finals, but were defeated 4-1 by OpTic. EnVy obliterated Team Liquid in the Losers' Finals to earn another shot, and capitalized on it, winning two straight best-of-7s to dethrone OpTic and capture the Fall 2016 Championship.
During the offseason, EnVyUs was one of two pro teams (the other being OpTic) to make no team changes. At the first event of Halo World Championship 2017 season - UGC St. Louis 2017, EnVyUs came out hot, sweeping Team Randa and Velvet Gaming before narrowly defeating Str8 Rippin 3-2. In the Winners Finals, they met OpTic once again, losing a close 3-2 series. In the Losers Finals, they were upset by Team Liquid in a 3-2 series, going home with 3rd place. At ME Las Vegas 2017, nV was strong to start, sweeping Second Nature and defeating Team CryptiK 4-2 to qualify for Worlds. In the following round, they were dominantly defeated by Team Liquid 4-1, sending them to Losers uncharacteristically early. They were barely able to avoid elimination against Luminosity Gaming, defeating them 4-3 to secure top 4. In the following round, they made short work of Pnda Gaming with a 4-1 win, earning another shot at Team Liquid. Though they managed to take the first two games, Liquid took the next four and sent EnVyUs home with another 3rd place finish. At Worlds, EnVy took an unexpected early loss to Splyce in Group Play, finishing 2nd in their pool as a result. In Winners Round 1, they took another close loss from Team Liquid, this time 4-3, sending them to Losers' Round 1 at the biggest event of the year. EnVy weren't finished however, as they mounted an inspiring Losers Bracket run, sweeping through Supremacy, TMMT Crowd Pleasers, Luminosity Gaming and Str8 Rippin to earn a rematch with Team Liquid with a spot in the Grand Finals on the line. EnVy pulled it off when it mattered, defeating the Team Liquid roster for the first time at an event with a score of 4-2. Unfortunately, they met a red-hot OpTic Gaming in the Finals, who swept them 4-0 and took home their second straight World Championship.
At the first event of the 2017 season, UMG Daytona, EnVyUs won their pool with victories over Ronin Esports and Team Liquid. After sweeping Atria United and Ronin in the Championship Bracket, EnVyUs went up against Oxygen Supremacy, a team from the Open Bracket coming off upsets over Liquid and Luminosity Gaming. EnVy dropped the first two games of the series but successfully rallied to take a 3-2 victory. In the Winners Finals, they were defeated by OpTic Gaming in their first matchup on the 2017 settings. After a 4-0 sweep over Team Liquid, EnVy moved onto the Grand Final and won two straight game sevens over OpTic to win their first event since the Fall Finals. The EnVyUs roster returned unchanged for the Summer 2017 Pro League season. They finished in an uncharacteristic fourth place with a record of 4-3. At the DreamHack Atlanta Finals, EnVyUs came out hot, sweeping Str8 Rippin and Oxygen Supremacy, but they were swept by OpTic in the third round. After sweeping Evil Geniuses and taking a 3-2 victory over Team Liquid, EnVyUs met OpTic again in the Losers Finals, where they were swept 4-0 and sent home in 3rd.
EnVyUs's performance in the Fall season was much stronger, as they finished in 1st place with a 7-0 record, dropping only four maps all season. At the DreamHack Denver Finals, EnVyUs beat CheckSix Gaming and Team Infused early before a third round loss to Splyce sent them to Losers early. EnVyUs struggled against the 5th seeded Luminosity Gaming but were able to win the series 3-2 and move onto the Losers Semifinals against Team Liquid, who handily swept them 4-0 and sent them home in a disappointing 4th place. EnVyUs Halo suffered another major blow on November 4, with the news that Huke would be retiring from Halo and joining the organization's Call of Duty team.[7] On December 15, EnVyUs suffered another major blow as both Snip3down and Mikwen left the organization to join Team Reciprocity.[8]
EnVyUs remained inactive in the scene until February 2, 2018, when they signed #3 North American team Ambush - consisting of iGotUrPistola, Jesse "bubu dubu" Moeller, Joey "TriPPPeY" Taylor, Tommy "Saiyan" Wilson, and coach Emanuel "Hoaxer" Lovejoy.[9] Team EnVyUs started MLG Orlando off strong, easily winning their pool before sweeping Team Infused in the first round of bracket play. In the following round, they became the first ever team to sweep the defending World Champion OpTic Gaming roster, but this was followed up with a 4-1 loss to Splyce. In the losers finals, EnVyUs were defeated 4-2 by OpTic and sent home in third. At MLG Columbus, EnVyUs started off similarly strong, sweeping their pool and qualifying for Halo World Championship 2018, but this time around they lost in the first round of bracket play to Splyce. After narrowly avoiding an upset loss to Str8 Rippin in the first round of losers, EnVyUs swept Renegades before running into Splyce once again. Splyce took a 3-0 victory and sent EnVyUs home in fourth. At Worlds, EnVyUs convincingly won their pool and went on to narrowly defeat Renegades 4-3 in the opening round of bracket play. They were then taken out 4-2 by Splyce, resulting in a losers bracket rematch against Elevate. EnVyUs won the match 4-0 and went on to win their following match against Team Reciprocity 4-3 in a game seven which featured a Reciprocity member's controller disconnecting at a crucial moment in-game. In the losers finals, EnVyUs very nearly defeated TOX Gaming, but ultimately took third place after a 4-3 loss.
